Three steps

How to Convert CSV to XML

Use this page when your source is CSV text or a CSV file. If you already have XML and need a spreadsheet instead, use the XML to CSV Converter.

1

Paste or upload CSV data

Paste CSV text or choose a .csv, .tsv, or .txt file from your device. The file is read locally in your browser.

2

Customize XML output

Confirm the delimiter, choose whether the first row contains headers, and set the XML root and row element names.

3

Copy or download XML

Preview the structure, then copy the full result or download an .xml file.

Example

CSV to XML Example

By default, each data row becomes a child of the root element. Headers become tag names, values stay as text (so 001 keeps its leading zeros), and characters such as & and < are escaped.

CSV input

id,Product Name,Unit Price ($),Note
001,Keyboard,59.99,"Tom & Jerry"
002,Mouse,29.99,<clearance>
003,陈,12.50,

XML output

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<records>
  <record>
    <id>001</id>
    <Product_Name>Keyboard</Product_Name>
    <Unit_Price>59.99</Unit_Price>
    <Note>Tom &amp; Jerry</Note>
  </record>
  <record>
    <id>002</id>
    <Product_Name>Mouse</Product_Name>
    <Unit_Price>29.99</Unit_Price>
    <Note>&lt;clearance&gt;</Note>
  </record>
  <record>
    <id>003</id>
    <Product_Name>陈</Product_Name>
    <Unit_Price>12.50</Unit_Price>
    <Note></Note>
  </record>
</records>

How CSV headers become XML names

Invalid or empty headers are cleaned before tags are written. Duplicate names get a numeric suffix.

CSV header XML name
Product NameProduct_Name
2026 Sales_2026_Sales
Unit Price ($)Unit_Price
_id_id
(empty)column_1
name, namename, name_2

CSV to XML Conversion Options

Delimiters and headers

Auto detect comma, semicolon, tab, or pipe. Keep First row as headers for named tags, or turn it off to use column_1, column_2, and so on.

Root and row tags

Set the root and row tag names required by the app you’re importing into.

Safe XML names

Invalid header characters are cleaned, empty headers become column_N, and duplicate names are made unique before tags are written.

Escaping and formatting

Characters such as & and < are escaped automatically. Characters XML does not allow are removed. Choose indented or compact output, with an optional UTF-8 XML declaration.

Field mapping

Convert CSV Columns to XML Elements or Attributes

Child elements are the default and work for most feeds and imports. Choose Attributes when the receiver expects values on the row tag itself.

Child elements

Each column becomes a separate tag inside the row element.

Attributes

Column values appear inside the row tag, such as <record id="001"/>.

Empty fields

By default empty cells still produce empty elements or empty attributes. Enable Omit empty fields when you want those columns left out.

Attributes example

<record id="001" Product_Name="Keyboard" Unit_Price="59.99" Note="Tom &amp; Jerry"/>

CSV to XML FAQs

How do I convert CSV to XML?

Paste CSV text or upload a .csv, .tsv, or .txt file. Confirm the delimiter and whether the first row contains headers, set the XML root and row element names, then click Convert CSV to XML. Preview the result, copy it, or download an .xml file.

Can I convert CSV to XML online for free?

Yes. This free online CSV to XML converter needs no account and no installation. Conversion runs in your browser, so you can convert a CSV file to XML without uploading it to a server.

Can I convert a CSV file into XML with custom tags?

Yes. Set your own root element and row element names, such as products and product. Column headers become child element names or attribute names, with invalid XML characters cleaned automatically.

How are CSV headers converted into XML elements?

Each header becomes a tag name. Spaces and symbols become underscores, names that start with a digit get a leading underscore, empty headers become column_N, and duplicate headers are made unique (name, name_2).

Can I generate XML attributes from CSV columns?

Yes. Under Fields as, choose Attributes to write each row as a single element with column values as attributes, or keep Child elements for nested tags under each row.

Does the CSV to XML converter preserve leading zeros?

Yes. Cell values stay as text, so IDs like 001, postal codes, and long numeric strings keep their original digits. Nothing is auto-converted to a number during export.

Is my CSV file uploaded to a server?

No. Parsing and conversion stay in this browser tab. File contents, file names, and cell values are not sent to xlsxtocsv.net or analytics services. Only you can copy or download the XML output.
